Walks and Activities
They only know a country who are acquainted with its footpaths. By the roads, indeed, the outside may be seen; but the footpaths go through the heart of the land.

George Orwell Discovery Walk
George Orwell Discovery Walk
Join us ‘Coming Up For Air’ in the Chilterns to discover George Orwell’s ‘golden country’. His childhood in the Oxfordshire countryside around Henley can be seen to have influenced passages in some of his writing. As we walk it is not difficult to find ourselves in both 1984 and his earlier novel Coming Up for Air.
** This walk is available for PRIVATE BOOKING only. Please contact us to agree walk date before booking. Minimum group size 2 people. **
If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.
A walk in the footsteps of George Orwell
A journey of discovery in the footsteps of a young George Orwell (Eric Blair) and through his lost 'Golden Country'. Along the way we hint at various aspects of Orwell's life and work, share his interest in natural history, and reveal how his childhood here in the Oxforshire countryside around Henley may have influenced some of his writing. 2025 marked 75 years since Orwell's death and his works remain ever popular. We start our walk from Shiplake Station along the Thames Path National Trail. The river is where the young Orwell (Eric Blair) loved to fish. We then head up the hill towards Binfield Heath and through bluebell woods where 1984 hero Winston would go to escape the Thought Police. Returning to Shiplake, we pass the house where Orwell once lived.
For a longer walk option, the route may be extended to Crowsley Park to discover a ‘listening station’ with echoes of Big Brother. There may be the opportunity to pause for a drink at the Bottle & Glass Inn (with Orwell’s approval!)
We offer flexible booking on this walk - get in touch to agree a date.
